World Hunger Day is celebrated on 28th May each year across the globe to raise awareness on the causes of world hunger. Malnutrition, poverty, lack of infrastructure, and food wastage are some of the primary causes of world hunger.
The World Hunger Day 2015 theme ‘Do something great’ appeals to developed and developing countries across the world to come together in partnership with the affected men, women and children to help them find sustainable solutions on how to solve world hunger.
One in nine people in the world don’t have enough food to eat each day.
Asia contains two-thirds of the world’s hungry population.
45% deaths of children under the age of five are caused by malnutrition.
India ranks 55 out of 76 countries on Global Hunger Index, status being ‘serious.’ Hunger is a deep-rooted issue that India struggles with every day.
Akshaya Patra works with people around the world to end classroom hunger in India. Serving wholesome food to over 1.4 million children across 10 states in India, we work towards providing a sustainable solution to end classroom hunger. By serving in schools we ensure hundreds of thousands of children across India attend school. Because of this unlimited mid-day meal served entire academic year, children stay in school as they do not have to work for a square meal every day. With education they have better skills and chance at better paid jobs. Akshaya Patra also reaches out 152,041 children between the ages of 0-6 years through its Anganwadi feeding programme.
