Rushi Pancholi is an 8th standard student at Shri Narsinhrao Primary School, Vadodara, Gujarat. She dreams of joining the police force to protect the society from criminals. Speaking of it, she says, “I want to become a police officer. We have a lot of robberies happening in our area. Last year, someone robbed our neighbouring house. That’s when I realised that I should become a police officer and put an end to these robberies.” She further continues, “When I become a police officer, I’ll nab the culprits and put them behind bars for a long period of time. Hence, they won’t be able to commit such crimes again.” “When I told my parents that I wanted to join the police, they said that I should grow up first and focus on studies. I can dream about my aspirations after I clear my 10th standard.”

Rushi lives with her family at a walking distance from the school. Talking of her family, she says, “My father, Gunwantbhai works in a diamond factory, and my mother, Manishaben is a housewife. I have three sisters and a brother, of which, two sisters work as a tailor and one studies in 10th standard. My brother is studying in 5th standard in the same school.”

Speaking of her routine, Rushi says, “I wake up at 7 o’clock. After completing my morning chores, I sit for studying and do a revision of the subjects taught the previous day at school. The school timings are from 9-5. Once I reach home, I have some snacks and sit down to study.” “I don’t go out to play. I know that physical fitness is important for getting admitted to the police. Although I am not too much into sports or physical activities right now, I’m planning to start paying attention towards it too,” she says with a shy smile.

“On Sundays, I get up late. After waking up, I get ready and have snacks while watching my favourite comedy show. The main character in it is quite funny and I enjoy the way he talks and passes on sarcastic comments. After that I again sit down to study and complete the pending homework. Post studying, I prefer watching TV. But, my brother does not let me watch it peacefully. So, I have to complain about it to my mother. Then she gives him an earful.” says Rushi grinning widely. Continuing further, she says, “Me and my siblings don’t fight much. Even during COVID, when the schools were closed, we used to study together. I used to help him with his homework. Since we could not go outside, we used to play many indoor games.” “After COVID, when school started, I was all excited about it. The first thing that I did after coming back to school was meet my friends. We discussed our schedule during those days. The best part was sitting together and having lunch with them. Although we had to maintain distance, it was a memorable day.”

Rushi and her brother are beneficiaries of Akshaya Patra’s school feeding programme. The siblings receive hot, tasty, and nutritious food every day at school. Speaking of it, Rushi says, “We receive food in school from Akshaya Patra. I have been to the kitchen where the food is made. There were large vessels in which the food was cooked. The people working there showed us the entire kitchen. They all were wearing masks and gloves. We were even asked to wear hair caps and masks. In fact, I told my mother also about how the entire kitchen was clean. I liked the cold room the most. I was really cold and they stored all the vegetables there.” “We get something different every day on the menu. But the best thing on the menu I like is Sukhdi, and dal-rice.”

Just like Rushi and her brother, there are 2.1 million children in India benefitting from Akshaya Patra’s mid-day meals. These meals are an effort to implement the government’s PM POSHAN Abhiyaan. The goal of the programme is to provide children with hot, tasty and nutritious meals which will aid in their growth. These meals ensure that the children like Rushi can focus on their studies and work hard towards achieving their goals
