Deepak: A Future Doctor Inspired by the Pandemic

Deepak Keer is a 6th standard student at Mahatma Gandhi Government School Mohi, Nathdwara, Rajasthan. He dreams of a future where diseases are no longer incurable. His ambition to become a doctor, stems from witnessing the resilience and dedication of healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. "I saw how doctors worked tirelessly to treat patients and find cures for the virus," Deepak says. "It inspired me to become a doctor." His goal is to create medicines for diseases that currently have no cure, ensuring that no one suffers needlessly.

Speaking of the joint family he lives in, Deepak says, “I live with my parents, grandparents and younger sister. My mother, Sangeeta, works as a government employee. My father, Ramchandra, runs a kirana (grocery) shop.” His younger sister, a 4th standard student at the same school, looks up to Deepak as a role model. "We study together and share stories about our day," he says. The family dynamic is one of support and encouragement, with his grandparents often sharing wisdom from their experiences.

At school, Deepak is a bright and curious student. He excels in science, a subject he finds fascinating. "My favourite subject is science," he says. His teachers have recognised his potential and often encourage him to delve deeper into his studies. When he’s not studying, Deepak enjoys playing cricket with his friends or helping his father at the grocery shop. "Sometimes, after school, I go to the shop to help my father arrange items on the shelves or assist customers," he says. This exposure to real-life challenges has taught Deepak the value of hard work and empathy.

The mid-day meal programme run by Akshaya Patra is a highlight of Deepak’s school day. "The meals we get in our school are delicious. They serve us different dishes every day. My favourites are dal-chawal and roti-sabzi," he says. Akshaya Patra’s school feeding programme is an effort to implement PM POSHAN Abhiyaan in government schools. These efforts align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2 and 4), which aim at eradicating hunger and facilitating quality education.

For Deepak, becoming a doctor is not just a personal ambition but a mission to serve humanity. His inspiration from the pandemic has only strengthened his resolve to make a meaningful contribution to the world. His story is one of inspiration, determination and the power of dreams. With the support of his family, school and the nutritious meals provided by Akshaya Patra, he is well on his way to achieving his goal of making a difference in the world
