Dhanteras or Dhanatrayodashi is the first day of the five-day long festival of Diwali/Deepavali. It is considered an auspicious occasion to make new purchases. The origins of this day can be traced back to the Samudra Manthan (churning of the milk ocean) in Hindu mythology in which Goddess Lakshmi and God Dhanvantari emerged, signifying wealth and health respectively.
